Heralding in the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, as a part of exhibition “Cannes fait le mur” that will take place until 12th July at Cannes, giant portraits of world renowned celebrities decorate the city of Cannes. These prestigious clichés were taken by one of the most sought after photographers of the 7th art, Lorenzo Aguis, for the agency Contour, of Getty Images. He agreed to give us the “behind the scenes” interview.

What is the artistic connection between the 17 images currently on display in “Cannes fait le mur?”
They were all shot by me over the past 10 – 12 years; some were taken at the Cannes Festival itself, others in various locations around the world. I have been very fortunate to work with so many talented actors and actresses over the years.
Did you select the location for each image in Cannes? And if so, how did you decide who went where?
The images were chosen in collaboration with the Mayor’s office. We worked together to identify the best portraits for the best locations across the city. I think they look wonderful and I am very grateful to the Mayor and the city of Cannes to allow me to showcase some of my work. It is a rare privilege.
If you had to choose some adjectives for the personality or expression of the people in “Cannes fait le mur,” what would you say?
Captivating, magnetic and dynamic.

Do the famous people you photograph thank you afterwards for your work and the subsequent photograph?
Well they do not run off with my camera if that’s what you mean! All the celebrities I have worked with have been professional, co-operative and willing to work. I am lucky that I work quickly, which I think helps with my relationship with the subject. Their time is precious and they work hard to protect their privacy. I always like to surprise them and try and finish a shoot early.
Have you clashed with any of your subjects around how they would be photographed? (i.e. do some stars try to control the photo shoot?)
No … no clashes. It’s a collaborative process and it should not be forced.
Have you photograph any given individual more than once?
I have been very lucky to work with several actors and actresses more than once: Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, Thandie Newton to name a few. I take it as a great honour to be asked to photograph someone more than once – it means I must have done something right the first time!
Your website displays and impressive mosaic of “people” photos and an intriguing lack of words. Is there a particular reason for not writing about your work or your life?
It’s a website for clients to quickly view my work – I have my agents in Europe, New York and LA to do all the talking for me. It’s a cliché and its true… pictures speak a thousand words.
