Alec Soth: Gathered Leaves Exhibit at Antwerp’s FOMU

He is a beat photographer who sniffs out a city using his intuition, often finding himself in very intimate situations with his subjects.

Antwerp’s FOMU is hosting the great contemporary documentary photographer, Alec Soth. FOMU is showcasing his earlier works collected for the exhibition Gathered Leaves. The collected works are from his series Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), Niagara (2006), Broken Manual (2010) and Songbook (2014).

 

 

 

 

Soth is interested in stories that many people would initially find banal. His subjects are neither rich, famous, or even notable. He is a beat photographer who sniffs out a city using his intuition, often finding himself in very intimate situations with his subjects.

Our vision of America is so shaped by television and movies. All we see are Hollywood starlets and New York cops. We sometimes forget that there are whole other lives being lived in the middle of America. And some of these lives are really inspiring.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Soth is a member of Magnum, a blogger, a photojournalist, Instagrammer, photo printer, and teacher. His enthusiasm for photography has influenced and inspired the latest generation of art photographers.

 

His work will be on display until June 4th.
