For her series titled ‘IMAGO’, Polish photographer and filmmaker Zuza Krajewska visited a borstal located in the town of Studzieniec near Warsaw. Her pictures show young convicts between childhood and adulthood, guilty of anything from petty theft to more serious crimes.
“IMAGO is the last stage an insect attains during its metamorphosis, its precess of growth and development. (…)
Their all organs, including their genitals, are fully developed but young insects do not make use of all their functions (…) They have not attained full maturity yet.
This metaphor matches the portrayed teenagers.
At first glance they are biologically mature but not being fully emotionally developed, they cannot find their place in the society.”
